Muscat: The unified inspection unit of the labor market, established through an agreement between the Ministry of Labor and the Safety and Security Establishment (SSE), is set to become operational in early 2024. Its primary objective is to conduct rigorous inspection campaigns targeting non-compliant establishments and undocumented labor, while also streamlining the procedures preceding inspection operations.
Recently, the Ministry of Labor and the Security and Safety Corporation finalized an agreement to establish the Inspection Unit. This initiative aims to enhance the quality and efficiency of inspection operations, as well as improve the overall effectiveness of associated tasks. Furthermore, the adoption of new policies to regulate the Omani labor market is a significant focal point.
Nasser bin Salem Al Hadhrami, the Director General of the General Directorate of Labor in Dhofar Governorate, clarified that the inspection unit will serve as a security support unit for the Ministry of Labor's inspection team. Its role will involve apprehending workers who violate labor laws, ministerial decisions, and the regulations that enforce them.
Al Hadhrami further stated, "The inspection unit will intensify its campaigns to eradicate illegal labor, itinerant workers, and other individuals who violate the laws governing the labor market. Additionally, this unit will be responsible for transporting violators to and from labor affairs centers, police stations, public prosecution offices, or the airport in cases where deportation from the country is necessary."
He also explained that the unit will be responsible for managing and operating the labor affairs centers. These centers will detain non-Omani workers who have violated labor laws, while providing security services and operational support.
The establishment of the inspection unit affirms the government's dedication to implementing fresh policies that aim to regulate the labor market effectively. By improving the quality and efficiency of inspection procedures, this initiative is in line with the growth and expansion of the labor market. Furthermore, it aligns with the state's objective of promoting economic openness and facilitating investment.
