The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, actively participated in the 65th meeting of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) member states’ associations in Geneva.
Dr. Saleh Said Masan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, led Oman’s delegation during the sessions. Masan emphasized Oman’s commitment to collaborating with WIPO on various initiatives to strengthen the international organization’s intellectual property system within the country.
He highlighted the ongoing efforts to implement the “National Intellectual Property Strategy” in partnership with WIPO, aiming to create a comprehensive framework that promotes innovation and safeguards intellectual property rights in Oman.
Masan also pointed out that Oman has made significant progress in the Global Innovation Index (GII), advancing 10 positions in 2023 compared to the previous year, underscoring the country's dedication to fostering innovation and protecting intellectual property.
Masan highlighted the importance of the "Treaty on Genetic Resources and Related Traditional Knowledge" in safeguarding intellectual property rights for valuable resources. He also expressed appreciation for WIPO's efforts in ensuring fair access to benefits for indigenous peoples and local communities utilizing such resources.
During the meeting, Masan delivered a statement on behalf of the Sultanate of Oman, shedding light on the suffering of the Palestinian people due to Israeli attacks on their tangible and intangible heritage. The statement emphasized the violation of rights of individuals and objects, including men, women, children, health facilities, and educational institutions. Masan called for international organizations to take legal action against the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity.
