Oman Marks World Day To Combat Desertification, Drought

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, is joining the global community in commemorating World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. The event takes place every year on June 17th.

This year, the event will be held under the theme "Restore the Land, Unlock the Opportunities. "

As part of its involvement in the event, Oman is contributing to worldwide efforts to raise awareness of environmental issues, encourage communities to practice environmentally friendly behaviors, support local and international policies to protect natural resources, and foster cooperation to combat desertification and land degradation.

The celebration emphasizes the importance of ecosystem restoration in creating employment, improving food and water security, supporting climate initiatives, and developing sustainable economies.

The Environment Authority is launching efforts, projects, and tactics to increase green cover, safeguard biodiversity, and promote environmental sustainability. These include the National Initiative to Plant Ten Million Trees. The effort, which started on January 8, 2020, aims to expand green spaces, fight desertification, and rehabilitate degraded territories.

The Environment Authority is also working on a project to plant one million mangrove seedlings in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The initiative intends to increase marine biodiversity, absorb carbon dioxide, and boost ecotourism.
