More SMEs Employing Omanis: Ministry Of Labour

Muscat: The inaugural Ramadhan Night event organized by the Oman Chamber and Commerce and Industry (OCCI) focused on the challenges faced by private sector institutions and the importance of social dialogue in achieving stability in the labor market.

During a panel discussion, Sheikh Nasr bin Amer al Hosani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour, emphasized the role of governance in providing job opportunities for citizens. He stated that it is the responsibility of the sector or ministry to create employment opportunities annually.

Furthermore, Sheikh Nasr highlighted the significance of both public and private sector jobs as sources of livelihood. He emphasized that the private sector offers better prospects for career growth and higher remuneration in certain positions, which aligns with the aspirations of job seekers.

In addition, Sheikh Nasr advised young jobseekers to commence their professional journey early and not wait for the perfect job. He emphasized that the ministry has facilitated mobility between sectors, allowing private sector employees to apply for positions within the private sector.

Sheikh Nasr also shed light on the employment landscape in big commercial centers, noting that a majority of the Omani workforce in malls are women employed on part-time contracts.

The latest data reveals that a significant number of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are now opting to hire local workers, a shift from previous practices.

Efforts by the Ministry of Labour to facilitate job replacements through on-the-job training and rehabilitation have been noted.

During the event, Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, chairman of OCCI, emphasized the importance of labor market regulation in enhancing the business environment and supporting the private sector.

He highlighted that the event served as a platform for collaboration between government entities such as the Ministry of Labour, worker representatives like the General Federation of Oman Workers (GFOW), and the OCCI.

The discussions during the Ramadhan Night event focused on the recent amendments to the Omani Labour Law, shedding light on the responsibilities and rights of both employers and employees.

During the event, discussions were held on the various obstacles and issues that private sector organizations encounter in the labor market, as well as the significance of social dialogue in maintaining stability within the labor market.

The event saw the presence of key figures such as Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, and Nabhan bin Ahmed al Battashi, Chairman of GFOW.

The attendees delved into the recent amendments made to the Omani Labour Law and the regulations of the Social Protection Fund, highlighting the differences from previous legislations. Business owners were briefed on their legal responsibilities and entitlements under the law.

Furthermore, the participants explored a range of challenges and advancements related to labor rights in today's era, including issues like temporary employment, the influence of technology on traditional job roles, and the struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
