Muscat: On Tuesday, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in collaboration with the National Employment Programme and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, unveiled the 'Freelancer Registry' initiative, designed to support and regulate the tour guiding sector within the Sultanate of Oman.
The launch of this initiative was presided over by Azzan Qassim Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, amidst officials from both the public and private sectors at the Ministry’s headquarters.
The primary objective of the initiative is to bolster and oversee the tour guiding industry in Oman. Furthermore, the Registry streamlines processes for independent tour guides, offering them a conducive environment that enhances the quality of tour guiding services, aligning with the Sultanate of Oman’s tourism goals.
The Freelancer Registry establishes a legal and regulatory framework for tour guides, thereby improving service levels for visitors and supporting practitioners through training and development opportunities.
Azzan Qassim Al Busaidi stated, “The pivotal role of tour guides in the tourism sector, in showcasing the attractive aspects of tourist destinations, leaves a lasting positive impression on visitors. The likelihood of a tourist returning for another visit is significantly influenced by the guide’s demeanor, the authenticity of the information provided, and the engaging narrative employed during group tours.”
Al Busaidi highlighted that the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has mandated the completion of a tour guide training program as a prerequisite for obtaining a license, aiming to reinforce the concept of quality in tour guiding. This measure also aims to raise awareness among tour guide professionals, motivate them to improve their competitiveness locally, and encourage adherence to established quality standards for continuous improvement and development, alongside ensuring ongoing training and development for personnel in the field.
He further mentioned that as of the end of September this year, the number of Omani tour guides holding valid licenses had increased to 906.
Al Busaidi underscored that the introduction of the Freelancer Registry initiative for tour guides is intended to underscore the significance of the profession, recognize the invaluable contributions of tour guides to the tourism sector in the Sultanate of Oman, and inspire individuals interested in or pursuing studies in the tourism sector to consider a career in tour guiding.
This initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities for Omani citizens in this critical sector. Moreover, it outlines the advantages of registering with the Freelancer Registry, the facilities it offers, and the benefits of engaging with freelancers.
