Muscat: The National Ferries Company has witnessed a notable increase in passenger traffic, with a growth rate of 22 percent, transporting 122,699 individuals in the first half of 2024, in contrast to the previous year's figure of 100,591 passengers from the Wilayat of Masirah.
Deputy CEO of the National Ferries Company, Zaher bin Hamad Al Rashdi, elucidated that the surge in passenger numbers and the transportation of 4,035 tonnes of goods during the same period can be attributed to several factors. These include the active tourism movement, highlighting Masirah Island's status as a tourist destination and a significant attraction due to its natural beauty.
Furthermore, the organization of tourism events and activities has played a pivotal role in boosting the influx of tourists and visitors. The Masirah Tourism Forum, held in January 2024, aimed to promote investment in marine tourism, underscored by the island's unique geographical features, diverse tourism offerings, exceptional marine environment, and favorable weather conditions year-round, which have all contributed to the increase in tourist arrivals.
Al Rashidi emphasized the significant contribution of the ferry service connecting Masirah Island to Shanna Port in facilitating the movement of both tourists and citizens, as well as in bolstering economic activities and services.
It is important to highlight that the growing demand for the ferry service to and from Masirah Island not only underscores the efficiency of the ferry fleet but also its multifaceted role in fulfilling social, tourism, and economic objectives. By offering a variety of travel options that meet the highest standards of safety, security, and hospitality, the ferry service has become a preferred mode of transportation for travelers.
