New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss insights from his recent meeting in Alaska with US President Donald Trump regarding the Ukraine conflict.
PM Modi reiterated India's long-standing call for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine situation and expressed support for all related efforts.
He expressed gratitude to President Putin for the phone conversation and for providing his viewpoint on the Alaska meeting.
"I thank my friend, President Putin, for his call and for sharing insights from his recent discussions with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and endorses all efforts in this direction. I look forward to our ongoing dialogues in the future," PM Modi stated in a post on X.
India welcomed the US-Russia Summit and acknowledged the advancements achieved.
"India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the quest for peace is highly commendable," a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs stated on July 16.
"India values the progress made during the Summit. The path forward can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy. The global community desires a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine," the statement continued.
Although the Summit was expected to last around seven hours, it concluded in under three. Trump and Putin addressed a group of journalists following their discussions, delivering relatively short pre-prepared statements. Neither leader took questions, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Putin affirmed his country's commitment to ending the war, but emphasized that the "primary causes" of the conflict must be addressed for any agreement to be sustainable.
He also cautioned Ukraine and the European Union against disrupting progress and warned against attempts to use "backroom dealings to instigate provocations that could undermine the emerging progress," according to Al Jazeera.
Trump commended the "highly productive meeting," stating that "numerous points were agreed upon." He mentioned that there is a "very good chance of achieving a ceasefire" but acknowledged that there are still unresolved issues with Moscow, including at least one "notable" concern.
He warned that it is "ultimately their decision" - referring to Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "A deal isn't finalized until it is finalized," he remarked.
