Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has mourned the loss of a distinguished individual and a beacon of intellectual and cultural enlightenment, His Excellency Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed Al Rawas. The former advisor to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said for Cultural Affairs has passed away on the 18th of August, 2024.
Al Rawas, who was 79 years old at the time of his passing, dedicated his life to the service of his nation, contributing significantly to its cultural and intellectual landscape.
He served in various capacities, including Minister of Information and Youth Affairs from 1979 to 1982, followed by his role as Minister of Information from 1982 to 2001.
During the tenure of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Al Rawas was appointed as Adviser to Sultan Qaboos for Cultural Affairs, a position he continued to hold under His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik until his retirement in April 2020.
Born in the Wilayat of Salalah, Dhofar Governorate, Al Rawas completed his education at Al Saidiya School in Salalah and held numerous prestigious positions throughout his career.
