Muscat: HCG Hospital, Mumbai, India, in collaboration with the Muscat Family Physicians Group and Global Treatment Services, hosted an International Medical Conference titled "Advances in the Surgical Treatment of Breast Cancer and the Role of Medical Oncology." This prestigious event took place at the Hotel Intercity Muscat on Friday, August 16, 2024.
Dr. Salim, a Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Breast Surgery at the National Oncology Center in Oman, was honored as the Guest of Honour.
Breast Cancer represents the highest 13% of all cancers detected in Oman, with a prevalence among females at 21%. It is diagnosed at a median age of 49 in Omani women. Regrettably, it is typically detected in the advanced stages, with a low 5-year survival rate of 67%.
Dr. Viju Murthy, a Consultant Breast Surgeon at HCG Hospital in Mumbai, delivered a compelling presentation during the conference. She underscored the importance of increasing awareness about screening and early detection, given the rising incidence of breast cancer globally and the critical role early detection plays in treatment outcomes.
Dr. Murthy also discussed various surgical strategies for managing both early and advanced breast cancer, including innovative techniques for scarless or minimally visible scars and reconstruction using the patient's own tissue instead of implants. These approaches are crucial for restoring a woman's body image and confidence, enabling her to return to a normal life. The overarching message was that regardless of the stage at which breast cancer is detected, recent advancements in treatment offer hope for a cure for many patients.
Dr. Sachin Trivedi, the Director of Medical Oncology at HCG Mumbai, presented on the novel approach of immunotherapy in cancer treatment. He highlighted the transformative impact of immunotherapy on cancer treatment, improving the quality of life for patients and enabling specialists to cure cancer in many cases.
He further spoke about the significance of comprehensive gene profiling, which includes expanded genetic tests, in the successful management of cancer.
Both speakers addressed all questions posed by the attending physicians during the interactive session.
The conference was attended by approximately 60 distinguished medical professionals from Oman, including breast cancer specialists, surgeons, gynecologists, internists, and family physicians from both public and private healthcare institutions.
The speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration in scientific exchanges and the potential for leveraging each other's clinical expertise. They pledged to return to Oman to further strengthen ties with colleagues and the local community.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Sanjay Dalal, the Founder of the Muscat Family Physicians Group, expressed his gratitude to the speakers for their informative and educational scientific session.
The commitment of HCG Hospital to continuing such programs in Oman is commendable. HCG Hospital has established itself as a leading institution in cancer treatment and patient care in India.
