UN Secretary General Describes Oman 'Voice Of Wisdom, Peace Builder'

Muscat: The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for the exceptional partnership between the Sultanate of Oman and the UN.

During an interview with Oman News Agency (ONA), Guterres praised Oman's significant role and efforts in resolving numerous regional issues. He referred to Oman as a "peace builder" in the region.

Furthermore, the UN Secretary General described Oman as a "voice of wisdom" and an "essential partner" that is highly respected by all. He emphasized Oman's ability to engage with global powers as an "honest partner," highlighting its endeavors in de-escalation and easing tensions to promote regional security.

Guterres emphasized the importance of the existing cooperative relations between Oman and the UN, including its various bodies. He also highlighted Oman's consistent support for UN efforts and its unique role in facilitating dialogue and peace agreements in the region.

Regarding the current situation in the Gaza Strip, the UN Secretary General emphasized the UN's unwavering commitment to mobilize all available resources and capacities to assist the population in Gaza, despite the tragic and extremely challenging conditions. He expressed his sorrow for the unprecedented number of civilian casualties.

Guterres appealed to countries with influence over Israel to ensure the opening of all crossing points, allowing the flow of humanitarian aid to reach all areas in the Gaza Strip. He also stressed the urgent need for an immediate and humanitarian cessation of all military operations in Gaza to alleviate the ongoing suffering of civilians.

The UN Secretary General emphasized the significance of resolving the conflict in the Gaza Strip and working towards a two-state solution to ensure Palestine's full sovereignty over its territories. He also highlighted the obstacles encountered by the United Nations in granting Palestine full membership, citing the global divisions and geopolitical changes as major challenges faced by the organization since its establishment in 1945.
