Oman Participates In Meeting Of WIPO Assemblies Of Member States

Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the 66th session of the WIPO Member States Assemblies, which runs in Geneva, Switzerland, until July 17, 2025.

Oman's delegation is led by Dr. Saleh Said Masan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry.

During his address at the event, Dr. Saleh reiterated Oman's national initiatives to create a comprehensive intellectual property system that includes digital infrastructure, updates to legislative frameworks, skill development for national cadres, and public awareness of intellectual property culture. This approach, he explained, is based on the belief that intellectual property is a key component in fostering the development of a knowledge-based economy and the promotion of innovation.

Dr. Saleh noted that Oman had made significant progress in strengthening its cooperation with WIPO. This, he noted, was achieved through Oman’s membership in international intellectual property treaties and the execution of associated projects. He further stated that these initiatives involve assisting Omani frankincense producers and educating them on the fundamentals and management of intellectual property, as well as its use in their establishments. In addition, the marketing value of Omani frankincense will be increased both locally and internationally by employing the intellectual property system as a geographical indicator.

Dr. Saleh appreciated WIPO's collaboration with the Sultanate of Oman in implementing the National Intellectual Property Strategy Project, which aims to establish a sustainable national intellectual property system that serves as an empowering measure for protecting innovation, improving the competitiveness of the national economy, and fostering the development of a culture of intellectual property.

He also mentioned that collaboration with WIPO experts occurred during the modification of the Omani version of the "Distance Learning Programme for Intellectual Property Fundamentals (DL101)" to ensure that the program complies with Oman's national laws and culture. This is in addition to seeking the expertise of WIPO specialists, who offer technical advice on updating national legislation and recommending best intellectual property practices.

At the end of his address, Dr. Saleh reaffirmed the Sultanate of Oman's unwavering dedication to supporting the efforts of WIPO and its agencies. He emphasized Oman's commitment to cooperate in joint efforts to establish a more just, comprehensive, and effective global intellectual property system that aligns with WIPO member states' wishes for sustainable development and innovation protection.
