Trump Announces 35 Per Cent Tariffs On Goods Imported From Canada

Washington, DC: On Thursday (local time), US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose a 35-percent tariff on Canadian imports. Trump sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to notify him of the tariff.

Trump shared the letter he wrote to Carney on his social media site, Truth Social. He stated that Canada's failure to prevent fentanyl from entering the United States contributed to the tariff policy.

In his letter, Trump stated, "As you will recall, the United States imposed Tariffs on Canada to deal with our Nation's Fentanyl crisis, which is, in part, caused by Canada's failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our Country. " Instead of cooperating with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own tariffs. Beginning August 1, 2025, we will impose a 35% Tariff on Canadian goods shipped into the United States, disregarding any Sectoral Tariffs.

Goods transshipped to evade the higher tariff will be liable to that tariff. As you're aware, there will be no Tariff if Canada or firms in your Country choose to build or produce goods in the United States; in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely. In other words, in a matter of weeks, he said.

In the letter, Trump threatened to raise the tariff rate by the same amount if Canada chose to raise its tariffs on Canadian goods. He also criticized Canada's tariffs on US dairy exports and labeled the trade deficit a significant danger to the US economy and national security.

In his letter, Trump stated, "I must point out that the flow of Fentanyl is hardly the only issue we have with Canada, which has numerous Tariff, Non-Tariff, and Trade Barriers that contribute to unsustainable Trade Deficits in the United States. " Canada imposes exorbitant tariffs on our dairy farmers, up to 400%, and that is assuming our dairy farmers have the opportunity to sell their goods to the Canadian people. The trade deficit is a serious threat to our economy and, indeed, our national security.

If Canada collaborates with me to stop the supply of fentanyl, we may contemplate revising this letter. These Tariffs may be revised, upwards or downwards, based on our relations with your Country. You'll never be disappointed with the United States of America, he said.
I'm sorry, but I'm unable to access external websites, including Truth Social. However, if you provide me with the content of the post or any pertinent details, I can assist you with that!

Trump also proposed a new round of tariffs on imports from seven countries: Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, the Philippines, Moldova, and Brunei. These tariffs will be effective starting August 1. The White House has released letters in which Trump addresses to leaders of these seven nations and mentions the tariffs they will incur while exporting products to the United States.

According to the letters, the United States will impose a 30% tariff on commodities sourced from Sri Lanka, Iraq, Algeria, and Libya. In the letters, Trump stated that Moldova will be subject to a 25% tariff when exporting products to the United States.

According to the letters, imports from Brunei will be subject to a 25% tariff, but those from the Philippines will be subject to a 20% tariff. In his letters, Trump threatened to raise the tariff rate by the same amount if the nations chose to raise their tariffs on Japanese goods. On July 8, Trump said that tariffs would take effect on August 1, 2025, and must be paid without any extensions.

In a recent post on his social media site Truth Social, Trump said, "As per letters sent to various countries yesterday, in addition to letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time, TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025. " There has been no change to this date, and there will be none. In other words, all funds will be due and payable on AUGUST 1, 2025. No extensions will be granted. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
