Oman Marks World Intellectual Property Day

Salalah: The Sultanate of Oman celebrated World Intellectual Property Day with a focus on "Intellectual Property (IP) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity". The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Economy, Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry's branch in Dhofar Governorate, and supporting firms, organized the event.

The ceremony took place at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment, under the patronage of HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar. As part of the celebration, a department for intellectual property and patents was inaugurated to enhance institutional cooperation and contribute to the realization of the SDGs.

HH Sayyid Marwan also launched the Omani version of "DL101", a comprehensive course that provides essential knowledge about different aspects of IP. The course aims to educate participants about the rights of IP owners and users, while aligning with the laws and culture of Oman. It emphasizes the practical application of theoretical knowledge, bridging the gap between institutions and society.

The World Intellectual Property Day activities included a discussion panel that explored the role of IP in sustainable development. The panel focused on gathering public opinion and drafting proposals on how to effectively utilize IP to achieve the SDGs.

Additionally, a roadshow was organized to showcase the contributions of various public and private establishments, as well as innovators and inventors.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth recently conducted the "Innovation Vision Award" to evaluate participating teams. This event recognized outstanding achievements in the form of the "Best Investment File" and the "Best Environmental Product" awards.

During the event's conclusion, the chief guest honored the winners of various contests organized by both ministries, focusing on inventions, innovations, and intellectual property.

In the year 2023, a remarkable increase of 12.59% was observed in the issuance of "national" and "international" trademarks, as well as "national" and "international" patents. A total of 14,234 applications were processed, surpassing the figures from 2022.
