Oman Human Rights Commission Deals With 523 Issues During 2023

Muscat: The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) successfully addressed and resolved a total of 523 issues and reports in 2023. Working closely with relevant departments, the commission provided legal guidance to the parties involved and advised them on how to pursue the matter with the appropriate authorities.

Out of the 523 cases, 65 reports were specifically related to civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as environmental and development affairs. The OHRC played a crucial role in offering its expertise to citizens and residents, providing guidance on 458 reports and assisting them in finding resolutions through collaboration with other departments.

Furthermore, the commission conducted on-site visits to the Central Prison and detention centers to assess the conditions of inmates and detainees, as well as their working environments.

The OHRC expressed its appreciation for the recent Royal orders issued in 2023, which granted pardons to 864 inmates, including both citizens and expatriates. These orders had a positive impact on the social reintegration of the released individuals and their families.

Additionally, the OHRC acknowledged the reports issued by international governmental and non-governmental organizations regarding the human rights situation in Oman. It actively engaged with United Nations special rapporteurs by participating in fact-finding questionnaires and collaborating with relevant parties to verify and respond to these reports.

As part of its mandate to protect and promote human rights in the Sultanate of Oman, the commission is currently working on drafting an annual report. This report will highlight the efforts and activities undertaken by the OHRC, as well as the issues successfully resolved and the specific responsibilities entrusted to the commission.
