MENA’s Largest Fish Canning Factory Begins Operations In Duqm SEZ

The largest fish canning factory in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region commenced operations at a site within the Duqm Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the first quarter of 2024. The International Seafood Company (Simak), a subsidiary of Fisheries Development Oman, is the region's largest tuna and sardine canning plant, covering an area of 85,000 m2 and boasting a production capacity of 100 million cans annually.

In an interview with the Observer, Eng Zakariya al Hasni, the Chief Executive Officer of Simak, highlighted that Oman produces more than 750,000 metric tonnes of fishery products each year, solidifying its position as the leading producer in the Middle East. This justifies the substantial investment made in the industry.

Moreover, Al Hasni pointed out that Simak identified a notable gap in the MENA market. He mentioned, "The majority of cans available in the region, including those from local brands, are imported from East Asia, making up 90% to 95% of the supply. This presents a significant opportunity for us to introduce our brand, Simak. Oman's reputation for abundant fisheries resources and its proximity to the Middle Eastern market positions us well to address this gap." The company also has plans to expand into European and American markets.

The CEO emphasized that the factory's strategic location benefits all stakeholders involved. Situated near the Duqm Industrial Fishery Port, another subsidiary of FDO, the factory can directly source produce from artisanal fishermen while reducing transportation costs.

Most of the fish brought to Duqm will be processed through this port, located just a short distance of two to three kilometers away. This close proximity enables us to easily connect with local artisanal fishermen, creating a more convenient and beneficial partnership. By helping to lower their operational expenses significantly, we remove the necessity for them to transport their catch to far-off destinations in the northern or southern regions of Oman. The cost savings on transportation will be quite substantial. Furthermore, being situated within the SEZ at Duqm allows us to export to other global free economic zones without incurring any tariffs or taxes.

Situated in a free economic zone, our exports to other free zones worldwide are exempt from tariffs and taxes. Moreover, any revenue generated here is tax-free as well. The company has the capacity to produce 192,000 cans of sardines and 180,000 cans of tuna daily. Simak products are expected to hit local markets within the next month.
