Salalah: The Environment Authority in Dhofar Governorate, in conjunction with the National Survey Authority and the Royal Air Force of Oman, launched the Metal Compass Project today at the peak of Samhan Mountain.
The project aims to record the highest point in Dhofar Governorate and promote it as an environmental landmark on Oman's tourism and environmental map. The project, which is being carried out in the Samhan Mountain Nature Reserve, gives extensive data about the reserve's features in order to improve environmental, tourism, and cultural awareness.
A concrete memorial topped with a metal compass structure indicating the four cardinal directions, as well as nearby environmental and tourism landmarks, has been erected at Moden Summit to showcase the reserve's cultural and natural character. Moden peak, at 1,757. 6 meters above sea level, is one of Oman's most unique natural sites and the country's second-highest mountain.
Engineer Zahran Ahmed Al Abdulsalam, Director General of Environment for Dhofar Governorate, said that the project transforms Samhan Mountain's peak into a promising environmental, tourism, and cultural landmark that provides unique experiences for both visitors and local communities.
The project boosts the reserve's reputation as a top ecotourism destination while protecting its plentiful natural resources and genuine cultural values. Al Abdulsalam stated that it encourages visitors to explore the reserve's natural, geological, and biological features, which will enrich basic knowledge for a deeper understanding of its unique ecosystem and assist conservation activities.
Notably, the Samhan Mountain Compass Project considers scientific, environmental, tourism, and cultural aspects. It offers critical information on several components of the reserve's ecosystem, promotes conservation of natural resources, and enhances Samhan Mountain's tourist attraction and nature reserve.
