Jabal Akhdar’s Tourism Set For Revitalisation With New Roads, Airport

Muscat: The tourism industry in Jabal Akhdar is expected to experience a substantial boost with the implementation of new road projects and plans for a proposed airport, according to experts in the field.

Currently, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology is exploring an alternative route from South Al Batinah to Jabal Akhdar. The construction of this new road aims to improve accessibility to Jabal Akhdar, eliminating the need for four-wheel-drive vehicles and increasing tourist traffic to the picturesque green mountains.

In a recent development, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has invited specialized companies to submit tenders for site selection studies, master plans, design, and supervision for the proposed development of Jabal Akhdar, Masirah, and Sohar Airports.

Jagdeep Thakral, the General Manager of dusitD2 Naseem Resort Jabal Akhdar, highlighted the current accessibility challenges faced by Jabal Akhdar, which hinder its ability to attract a sufficient number of tourists. He expressed optimism that addressing this issue would bring about a positive transformation for Jabal Akhdar, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Thakral stated, "It's a significant issue that needs to be addressed. By tackling this matter, Jabal Akhdar will flourish. Creating a road suitable for regular cars will enable more people to access the mountains, resulting in a significant shift."

He further suggested that the proposed airport would be a game-changer, attracting numerous charter flights to the area. He emphasized that Jabal Akhdar is a haven for wellness and is perfect for a two to three-day escape. However, to extend visitors' stays, the mountains should offer additional amenities.

Thakral proposed introducing activities such as paragliding, hot air balloon services, and cable car rides, allowing visitors to experience the natural beauty of the area, similar to the popular Skyline Luge in Singapore.

Recognizing Jabal Akhdar as a destination that can be enjoyed all year round is of utmost importance. With an impressive 250 rooms and extensive facilities, we are fully equipped to cater to the needs of discerning travelers and handle a significant influx of tourists.

This stunning location, known for its breathtaking green mountains, experienced a remarkable surge in visitors during the first nine months of 2023, with a total of 161,974 individuals immersing themselves in its natural splendor.

The statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) highlight the diverse range of visitors, including Omani citizens, tourists from the GCC countries, and beyond, underscoring the growing popularity of this area.
