Fifties From Yashashvi, Sai Take India To 264/4 Against England In Manchester Test

Manchester: Half-centuries from lefthand batters Sai Sudarshan and Yashasvi Jaiswal helped India reach a total of 264/4 at the conclusion of the first day of the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 on Wednesday, played at Old Trafford in Manchester.

India concluded Day 1 at 264/4 in 83 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja (19) and Shardul Thakur (19) still at the crease.

The tourists began the last session at 149/3 in 52 overs, with Sai Sudarshan (26) and Rishabh Pant (3) undefeated on the crease.

The Shubman Gillled team reached 150 runs in the 53rd over. Team India surpassed the 200-run mark in their innings in the 65th over.

At a score of 212, Rishabh Pant was batting well on 37 in the fourth Test in Manchester when Chris Woakes bowled a vicious delivery that struck him firmly on the right foot. The injury appeared serious; there was a large swelling, a little bleeding, and he could hardly stand.

The physiotherapist hurried in, but it soon became evident that Pant was unable to continue. As he was in obvious discomfort, a vehicle was pulled in to take him off the field. Lefthand batter Ravindra Jadeja came out to replace him.

Sai Sudarshan reached his maiden Test fifty in the 69th over, hitting a four off offspinner Joe Root. In the 74th over of the innings, India lost their fourth wicket as Ben Stokes bowled Sai Sudarshan (61 runs off 151 balls) with the team total at 235.

Shardul Thakur hit a single off left-arm spinner Liam Dawson on the second delivery of the 79th over, completing India's 250-run total.

India ended day one of the Manchester Test at 264/4, with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur unconquered on the pitch. Before the game concluded, both players had formed an unbroken stand of 29(55).

The Three Lions' all-rounder Ben Stokes took two wickets (2/47 in 14 overs), while right-arm seamer Chris Woakes (1/43 in 17 overs) and Liam Dawson (1/45 in 15 overs) each claimed one wicket in their individual spells.

Earlier in the day, England won the toss and chose to field first. Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul got off to a good start, scoring a boundary each in the first three overs.

Jaiswal, on the other hand, survived a catch effort at slip in the first over because it fell short of the guy at second slip. Jaiswal struggled against Woakes, who defeated him several times, yet he persevered.

KL became the fifth batter to score 1,000 runs in England while playing for India, joining Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli in the elite group.

India battled through the first hour against Woakes, Jofra Archer, and Brydon Carse, scoring 42/0, with KL (21) and Jaiswal (13).

After drinks, both KL and Jaiswal continued their slog, with captain Ben Stokes striking KL's pad in his first over, but the opener survived. Jaiswal carved a cut that cut through the gap between third slip and gully, bringing India's fifty-run total in 17. 4 overs.

Towards the final few overs of the first session, Jaiswal became more aggressive, hitting some big shots against skipper Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, the heroes of England's Lord's victory. India concluded the session without losing a wicket.

Brief score: India 264/4 (Sai Sudharsan 61, Yashasvi Jaiswal 58; Ben Stokes 2/47) vs England.
