Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman is expected to celebrate the first day of Eid Al Adha 2024 on Sunday, June 16, 2024, according to the official holidays specified in Royal Decree No. (88/2022). The Eid Al Adha holiday will commence from Saturday, June 15, 2024, until Tuesday, June 18, 2024, marking the 9th to the 12th of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah.
The International Astronomical Center has reported that several Islamic countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, Morocco, and Ghana, have already begun the month of Dhul-Qi'dah on Friday, May 10, 2024. These countries will witness the crescent of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on Friday, June 7, indicating that the first day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah will fall on either Saturday, June 8, or Sunday, June 9. Consequently, the first day of Eid Al-Adha will be observed on Monday, June 17, or Tuesday, June 18.
Considering that the sighting of the crescent moon on Friday, June 7, will be visible to the naked eye in most countries worldwide, it is anticipated that these countries will commence the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on Saturday, June 8. As a result, Monday, June 17, will mark the first day of Eid Al-Adha for these nations.
On the other hand, the majority of Islamic countries began the month of Dhu al-Qa`dah on Thursday, May 9. These countries will witness the crescent of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on Thursday, June 6, indicating that the first day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah will fall on either Friday, June 7, or Saturday, June 8. Consequently, the first day of Eid al-Adha will be observed on Sunday, June 16, or Monday, June 17. However, due to the moon setting shortly after sunset on Thursday, June 6, in the central and western regions of the Islamic world, it is possible that many of these countries will commence the month of Dhu al-Hijjah on Friday, June 7. In such cases, Sunday, June 16, will be celebrated as the first day of Eid al-Adha.
