Musqat: In collaboration with the University Medical City, a specialized medical team at the Royal Hospital has successfully performed the first laparoscopic operation of its kind in Oman. The surgery, which lasted for two hours, was carried out on a female patient who had a high risk of developing a malignant tumor in the uterus.
Dr. Thuraya Rashid Al Rawahi, the Senior Consultant in Gynecological Oncology Surgery at the Royal Hospital and the head of the medical team, stated to Oman News Agency (ONA) that this operation marks a significant advancement in uterine tumor surgery in Oman.
According to Dr. Thuraya, this procedure reduces the risks associated with the complete removal of lymph nodes and saves time, while still maintaining the accuracy of the uterine cancer treatment plan.
Dr. Thuraya explained that the lymph node removal technique involves injecting a radioactive substance into the cervix before the operation. This allows for the removal of only the cancerous node, instead of removing all the lymph nodes in the pelvic area as was done in the past.
Furthermore, Dr. Thuraya emphasized that this technique helps in minimizing the side effects of surgery, such as leg swelling, which in turn accelerates the healing process and enhances the patient's quality of life.
