Gill Breaks Gavaskar's Record For Most Runs By Indian Skipper During A Test Series

London: Batter Shubman Gill overcame great compatriot Sunil Gavaskar for the most runs scored by an Indian captain in a Test series.

Gill achieved this milestone during his team's fifth Test against England at The Oval in London.

At the conclusion of the first session, Gill was unbeaten on 15 off 23 deliveries, including three boundaries.

So far in the series, Gill has made 737 runs in nine innings, averaging 92. 12 with four century and a high score of 269. He is the series' leading runscorer.

Gavaskar had 732 runs in a home series against the West Indies in 1978-79, averaging 91. 50 with four hundreds and one fifty in six Tests and nine innings. His highest score was 205.

He is now only 38 runs shy of breaking Gavaskar's record for most runs by an Indian in a bilateral Test series, which is 774 runs in four Tests against the West Indies away from home in 1971, with four centuries and three fifties and a top score of 220.

At the conclusion of the first session, India was 72/2, with Sai Sudharsan (25) and Gill (15) not out. India lost openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) and KL Rahul (14) early on, leaving them with 38/2.

England won the toss and chose to field first. The series now favours England by 21 points.
