Sohar: SOHAR Port and Freezone has entered into an agreement to initiate a significant project focused on creating a state-of-the-art shore power infrastructure at the container terminal of SOHAR Port.
This initiative is a joint effort with MoonRock serving as the primary investor and PowerCon Denmark acting as the technical collaborator.
This strategic endeavor will allow vessels to connect to onshore power while docked, which will greatly decrease emissions, enhance efficiency, and promote carbon neutrality by 2050. Additionally, it bolsters Oman’s appeal to global shipping lines aiming to fulfill the IMO decarbonisation green shipping objectives and aids the country’s shift towards a more sustainable logistics industry.
The shore power initiative is anticipated to draw in global shipping lines that are looking to lessen their environmental impact and adhere to International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards. Furthermore, the project aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to foster sustainable development and reinforce Oman’s role as a regional center for clean, efficient, and competitive logistics services within the GCC area.
This agreement highlights SOHAR Port and Freezone's dedication to enhancing its reputation as an integrated ecosystem that fosters innovation and promotes sustainability across the logistics, maritime, and trade sectors. It continues to play a pivotal role in driving sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Oman and the surrounding region.
Dr. Abdullah Sulaiman Al Abri, Vice President for Sustainability at SOHAR Port and Freezone, stated that this project represents a strategic milestone for both SOHAR Port and Freezone and for Oman overall. By fostering partnerships with leading firms, the port is actively contributing to the realization of Oman Vision 2040 and the carbon neutrality targets set for 2050. It also strengthens the competitive edge and capabilities of SOHAR Port and the broader logistics sector in Oman, marking a significant advancement in promoting green mobility within maritime shipping operations.
