Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially inaugurated the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy during a grand ceremony held at the Dewan-e-Khas of Lahore Fort on Sunday, as reported by the ICC.
The Curtain Raiser event has effectively heightened excitement in anticipation of the tournament's opening match on February 19, featuring the host nation Pakistan against strong contenders New Zealand.
The organizers illuminated Lahore Fort, creating a stunning visual display that heralds the return of the Champions Trophy, the first since 2017.
Pakistan, the defending champions after their victory in the 2017 tournament held in the United Kingdom, will aim to retain their title.
Key members of the 2017 trophy-winning team participated prominently in the Curtain Raiser at Lahore Fort, evoking cherished memories from their triumph over India by 180 runs in the final at The Oval, London.
PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi expressed the enthusiasm and readiness of Pakistan to host this significant event, describing it as a 'momentous occasion' for the country and its cricket-loving populace.
"The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 marks its return to Pakistan after 29 years. This tournament represents more than just cricket; it is a chance to highlight Pakistan's hospitality and fervor," Naqvi stated during the Curtain Raiser event, as quoted by the ICC.
Lahore Fort was thoughtfully selected as a highly symbolic site to officially ignite the tournament's torch.
The importance of this venue not only highlights Pakistan's rich cultural heritage but also emphasizes the longstanding cricketing tradition within the country. "This is your moment to fill the stadiums," Naqvi remarked, addressing the Pakistani fans who have eagerly awaited the return of an ICC event.
Pakistan has been placed in a group alongside New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh, while Australia, England, South Africa, and first-time participants Afghanistan comprise the other group.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
