Oman Joins International Community In Celebrating World Heritage Day

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, is participating in the celebration of World Heritage Day on 18 April. This year, the event coincides with the launch of a program highlighting the historical monuments, archaeological sites, and community culture of the City of Sur in the Wilayat of Sur, as it has been designated as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024. These features play a significant role in promoting cultural tourism.

Eng. Ibrahim Said Al Kharousi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Heritage, emphasized the importance of World Heritage Day in showcasing Oman's rich cultural heritage and historical identity. The celebration aims to enhance global understanding of heritage diversity and foster cultural interaction among different communities. Additionally, the event seeks to promote research and discoveries in the field of cultural heritage and establish a community partnership system that strengthens identity and citizenship.

To commemorate this occasion, the Ministry has organized a program at the City Walk Centre in South A'Sharqiyah Governorate. The program includes an exhibition and an educational workshop on archaeological excavation, specifically designed for children. The workshop provides a hands-on experience of excavating heritage sites and incorporates the use of decoupage and plastic to highlight ancient Omani symbols on souvenir items.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is committed to documenting and restoring historical and archaeological sites, while also emphasizing their global significance through projects that contribute to the local economy in line with Oman Vision 2040. Currently, the Ministry has registered approximately 36,000 archaeological sites, showcasing the country's rich historical legacy.
