National Museum Holds Event On Rock Engravings, Their Human Significance

Muscat: On Tuesday, the National Museum, through the Department of Museum Learning and Community Outreach, organized an event called "Rock Engravings" with the aim of showcasing the significance of rock drawings and engravings inspired by Oman's natural beauty throughout history.

One of the highlights of the event was a lecture titled "Examples of Rock Drawings in the Sultanate of Oman," which delved into the ancient rock drawings found in various valleys and mountains across Oman. The lecture not only presented these examples but also provided insights into their meanings, drawing techniques, and the tools used to create them. Following the lecture, participants were given the opportunity to explore the Prehistory and Ancient History Galleries of the National Museum through a guided tour, where they could witness firsthand the rock drawings and engravings.

Additionally, an art workshop was conducted as part of the event, allowing participants to practice drawing and engraving on wood, imitating the rock drawings and engravings displayed in the museum's galleries.

It is important to note that rock drawings and engravings have been discovered in various valleys and mountains across Oman, spanning different provinces and dating back to prehistoric and ancient times. These drawings depict a wide range of subjects, including symbols of human life, animals such as oryx, horses, camels, dogs, and elephants, as well as reptiles like scorpions and snakes. The rock art also includes depictions of war-related tools like spears, swords, and shields, as well as symbolic representations such as stars and the sun.
