"Maradona Was A True Hero": Narendra Modi On Football's Goat Debate

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi contributed to the ongoing discussion about the greatest football player of all time during a podcast with esteemed computer scientist and host Lex Fridman. He recognized the sport's significant popularity in India and reflected on the influence of various legends throughout different eras.

When asked to identify the greatest player, Modi cited Diego Maradona as the iconic figure of his time.

"In the 1980s, Maradona was the standout name. For that generation, he was a genuine hero, and if you ask the current generation, they will likely mention Messi," PM Modi remarked.

Maradona, celebrated for leading Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986, is still regarded as one of the most legendary figures in football. Modi also acknowledged Lionel Messi's prominence in contemporary football, illustrating how views on greatness can shift over time.

Throughout the discussion, Modi highlighted the burgeoning football culture in India. He commended the advancements of both the men's and women's national teams, emphasizing the sport's growth in various parts of the country.

"It is indeed true that numerous regions in India boast a vibrant football culture. Our women's team is excelling, and the men's team is also making significant strides," he noted.

Diego Armando Maradona was honored as the "Player of the 20th Century" by FIFA, sharing the title with Pele.
