Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has expressed its approval of a series of resolutions adopted by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress, which took place on Monday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
These resolutions strengthen the rights of the Palestinian people to access postal services. Oman highlighted that this action embodies the principles of justice and fairness, showcasing international solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The conference ratified three primary pillars, which received support from Oman and several other member states. These pillars included: Elevating the membership status of the State of Palestine within the Union, ensuring it possesses equal rights and responsibilities as other member states; Fully executing prior UPU agreements and resolutions concerning Palestine's entitlement to postal exchange through the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and offering technical and financial assistance to restore postal infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
During Oman's address at the conference, Nasr Badr Al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Post, reiterated that the UPU was established on the foundation of delivering mail to every individual without discrimination or exclusion. He emphasized that the Palestinian people continue to be denied this essential human right.
He remarked, "The Palestinian postal service, which should serve as a conduit for communication, has turned into a source of anguish: offices are destroyed, workers are targeted, letters fail to reach their destinations, and families are left waiting for news and medicine. Denying Palestinians their mail equates to stripping them of the most basic aspects of life and dignity."
He emphasized that the Union's power is rooted in its commitment to justice and equality for all nations, urging the international community and conference attendees to adopt a definitive position that reinstates the Palestinian postal service as a vital link for communication and hope.
Oman praised the supportive stances taken by the participants, stating that these landmark resolutions not only uphold the rights of the Palestinian postal service but also enhance the UPU's role as a UN entity that ensures universal postal services and humanitarian access.
