TEHRAN: Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, visited Iraq on Monday in advance of a trip to Lebanon. Larijani, the chairman of the National Security Council, departed on a three-day tour, according to Iranian state television, which was his first since assuming the role.
Larijani inked a bilateral security agreement in Iraq before traveling to Lebanon to meet with top Lebanese officials and individuals, according to state television. Details of the security agreement were not disclosed right away. Larijani met with Iraq's National Security Adviser Qassem al Araji to discuss the implementation of the security pact and the situation in the Gaza Strip, according to a statement from Araji's office.
According to a senior Iraqi official, the goal of the visit was to talk about the deal and update Iraq on Iran's stance on the most recent developments in the conflict with the United States and Israel. According to Iranian national television, Larijani and Araji inked a joint security memorandum of understanding.
