The Shura Council recently welcomed Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi, Minister of Information, to delve into the ministry’s official statement. During the Council’s 8th regular session of the 10th Term’s first annual convening, the minister elaborated on the media strategy and policy of the Sultanate of Oman. The statement highlighted the ministry’s achievements within the 9th Five Year Plan, as well as the strategic programs outlined for the 10th Five Year Plan. Additionally, the discussion covered the laws governing the media sector in Oman and the ministry’s initiatives in media training.
Dr. Abdullah emphasized the unwavering support of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for the Omani media, recognizing its pivotal role in the nation’s development. He stressed the importance of the media in raising awareness, shaping public discourse, preserving national identity, safeguarding achievements of the modern renaissance, and projecting Oman’s image globally.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted the media’s role in promoting knowledge dissemination and fostering cultural exchange. He underscored that the Omani media upholds the principles of freedom of opinion and expression within the legal framework established by the Basic Law of the State, as per Royal Decree No. 6/2021.
Dr. Abdullah reiterated that the Omani media is rooted in Islamic values, noble principles, and the Basic Law of the State.
The minister emphasized the Omani media's role in enhancing national unity, promoting loyalty to the homeland, and allegiance to His Majesty the Sultan.
The minister highlighted that the Omani media plays a crucial role in upholding authentic principles, preserving Omani society's cultural identity, and striving to maintain it.
The minister confirmed that the upcoming "media draft law" will regulate media practices effectively, incorporating comprehensive and innovative aspects to keep up with industry developments.
It is important to mention that the Shura Council has approved the draft media law and forwarded it to the State Council to conclude the legislative session.
The draft media law was formulated in response to the rapid changes in the media landscape, necessitating the consolidation of existing laws into a single comprehensive legislation.
Upon approval, the new bill will lead to the repeal of current laws governing media activities, including the "Printing and Publishing Law," the "Law on Private Radio and Television Establishments," and the "Law on Censorship of Artistic Works."
