HM Grants OMR7 Million To Establish An Autism Spectrum Disorder Centre

Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has kindly issued Royal directives to allocate OMR 7 million for the creation of the Autism Spectrum Disorder Care and Rehabilitation Center in the Muscat Governorate, which will function under the National Autism Centre.

Additionally, the Royal directives call for an assessment of the necessity for similar centers in other governorates, along with a timeline for their development based on the prevalence of cases in each area.

These directives, announced in conjunction with World Autism Awareness Day, highlight His Majesty's deep commitment to individuals with disabilities, underscoring the significance of delivering high-quality rehabilitative and therapeutic services. Such services are designed to empower these individuals towards independence, promote their integration into society, and ultimately foster an inclusive community that provides equal opportunities for everyone.

The center's establishment aims to offer specialized rehabilitation, care, and recreational services for those with autism spectrum disorder within a comprehensive, accessible, and integrated setting. This initiative will aid in their educational and social integration while enhancing their skills across various aspects of life.

The center will be built on the extended grounds of the National Autism Centre in the Wilayat of A’Seeb, encompassing a constructed area of around 26,000 square meters, with the capacity to accommodate 150 cases daily.

The center is set to be the first of its kind in the Middle East, distinguished by its diverse range of services. It will provide a comprehensive and integrated suite of rehabilitative services specifically designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. This includes state-of-the-art rehabilitation facilities equipped with advanced tools and technologies aimed at fostering social integration. Additionally, the center will offer specialized recreational programs through customized facilities and activities that cater to the health needs of participants. Those not enrolled will also have the opportunity to use these facilities during specific hours.

Moreover, the center will act as the primary authority for training programs aimed at professionals working with autism spectrum disorder, granting professional licenses in this area and providing ongoing training for families throughout all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. It will also offer temporary care services, featuring appropriate facilities for individuals with severe autism spectrum disorder, along with diagnostic and evaluation services through early and thorough assessments conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

The creation of this center aligns with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes the inclusion and empowerment of all community members, including those with disabilities. This dedication is reflected in its commitment to improving health and well-being, delivering high-quality and accessible healthcare, ensuring inclusive education that accommodates all students, including those with autism spectrum disorder, and promoting innovation and the development of assistive technologies to help individuals with disabilities navigate their challenges.
