Sinaw: The Environment Authority today introduced the PlasticFree Market campaign in a number of historic open-air markets across the North A'Sharqiyah Governorate, as part of its ongoing efforts to implement the third phase of Ministerial Decision No. (8/2024), which prohibits the use of plastic shopping bags.
According to Mohammed Amer Al Hajri, director of the governorate's Environment Department, the effort would include an awareness week aimed at business stores and traditional markets in the North A'Sharqiyah Wilayats. The tour began today with a trip to the "Thursday Market" in the Wilayat of Sinaw and will continue next week to cover the "Monday Market" in Wadi Bani Khalid, the "Tuesday Markets" in Al Mudhaibi and Bidiyah, the "Wednesday Market" in Ibra, as well as traditional markets in the wilayats of Al Qabil and Dima wa AlTa'een.
He explained that the campaign seeks to improve environmental awareness among merchants and marketgoers by informing them about the significance of minimizing plastic bag usage and substituting them with ecofriendly solutions.
Al Hajri stated that the campaign includes distributing multilingual awareness leaflets (in Arabic, English, and Urdu) to guarantee that the environmental message reaches all areas of society, as well as supplying reusable bags to shop owners and customers.
He said that the campaign includes participation from students on the governorate's higher education institutions' environmental councils, emphasizing the significance of involving youngsters in environmental activities and developing community connections.
Notably, the Environment Authority continues to undertake awareness campaigns and programs in North A'Sharqiyah, with the goal of encouraging good environmental behaviors and achieving a clean, safe, and sustainable environment across all governorate wilayats.
