Foundation Stone Laid For Telegraph Island Development Project In Khasab

Khasab: On Tuesday, the Musandam Governorate celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for a project aimed at developing the historic Telegraph Island (Jazirat Maqlab) in the Wilayat of Khasab.

This environmental tourism facility is being established through a collaboration between the Musandam Governor's Office, Musandam Municipality, OQ Company, and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

Under the patronage of Sayyid Ibrahim Said Al Busaidi, the Governor of Musandam, the ceremony took place.

The project encompasses the construction of a multipurpose hall measuring 731 square meters, which will be connected to a public service building spanning 130 square meters. Additionally, a sea landing platform measuring 8x2.5 meters and a mountain walkway that connects all parts of the island will be built.

Furthermore, the project includes the creation of two photography piers that offer stunning views of the island's prominent landmarks. It will also feature a shaded area, a guard room, and a building to house electricity generators and fuel tanks. The historical significance of the island adds to the importance of this project.

Telegraph Island was once a hub for the first modern telecommunication line in the Middle East. Its name is derived from the undersea cable that connected Mumbai in India to Basra in Iraq. In 1864, the island became a transmission station following the British government's permission granted by Sultan Thuwaini bin Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi.

This landmark played a pivotal role in the development of modern communication in the region. With its unique demographics, natural elements, and strategic location amidst the maritime creeks, Telegraph Island has become a captivating destination for tourists and adventure enthusiasts.
