MUSCAT: Gobhanu Korisepati, a former student of ABA Oman International School and the founder of Sustaining Women in Financial Turmoil (SWIFTmfi), has been honored with the Legacy Award at the Science Museum in London, United Kingdom. This recognition highlights his significant contributions to global microfinance and community empowerment. The award was presented by Crown Prince William of Wales, Duke of Cambridge, and received online congratulations from Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, representing the British Royal Family.
Korisepati's achievement is particularly noteworthy as he is the first and only individual from Oman to receive this prestigious accolade. The Legacy Award, established by The Diana Award organization in 2017, is a biennial award that recognizes 20 exceptional young leaders worldwide who have made visionary contributions to society. Inspired by the humanitarian legacy of the late Princess Diana, this award celebrates individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to inspiring and mobilizing new generations to serve their communities.
Korisepati's recognition as one of the 20 outstanding young leaders underscores the global impact and significance of his work, especially considering his young age. As the youngest founder of a microfinance institution, he has made a remarkable difference in the lives of many.
The Legacy Award holds a special place in the hearts of those who value Princess Diana's dedication to humanitarian work. It is the longest running award for young people and is awarded through a retrospective nomination process only.
Korisepati's groundbreaking work through SWIFTmfi, which initially originated from The ABA Oman School in 2019, has had a profound impact on the lives of women in marginalized communities by providing accessible microfinance solutions.
In a span of five years, his initiatives have empowered over 3,000 women in 77 countries to establish sustainable businesses, attain financial independence, and break free from the cycle of poverty, directly impacting the lives of more than 70,000 individuals.
Furthermore, SWIFTmfi's innovative online tool, SWIFT connect, has extended financial literacy and empowerment to over 400 young individuals across Asia and Africa.
In the previous year alone, Korisepati served as a role model for over 4,200 students from various schools involved in fundraising efforts, while also reaching out to more than 15,000 students worldwide through a powerful social media outreach. All this while managing his studies as a dual degree student at the University of Pennsylvania's Huntsman Programme.
Expressing his deep gratitude, Korisepati emphasized the significance of receiving the Legacy Award. He stated, "Being recognized with the Legacy Award is not just a personal achievement, but a celebration of the collective effort and resilience of the communities we serve. It inspires me to continue working towards a world where opportunity is not a privilege, but a right accessible to all. To be acknowledged as a part of the Late Princess Diana's legacy is an honor that goes beyond individual recognition, embodying the essence of compassion, philanthropy, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others."
As a recipient of the award, Korisepati will have access to the Legacy Award Development Programme, which provides tailored support to further his social action projects, along with a grant from the UK-based charity.
Innovation and leadership are key aspects that are emphasized in the program. Participants are provided with exclusive chances to participate in events alongside potential partners and receive valuable guidance from the Diana Award Team. These opportunities are designed to enhance their abilities in innovation, leadership, and driving social change.
Under Korisepati's guidance, SWIFTmfi is continuously progressing towards its mission. The recognition received acts as a symbol of hope and inspiration, motivating young individuals across the globe to make a positive impact on society. This aligns with the everlasting legacy of Princess Diana.
