Environment Authority Releases 12 Arabian Gazelles In Wild

Shaleem and Al Halaniyat Islands: The Environment Authority, through the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, has successfully released 12 Arabian gazelles as part of a resettlement initiative in the Wilayat of Shaleem and Al Halaniyat Islands.

This project aimed at domesticating Arabian gazelles is a key component of the authority's environmental programs, which focus on safeguarding the environment, conserving natural resources, and reintroducing wildlife into their native habitats, aligning with the goals of Oman Vision 2040.

The head of the Arabian Gazelle Domestication Team in Al Halaniyat Islands stated that a thorough survey of local plant species and water sources was conducted prior to the release. Subsequently, the gazelles were moved from the Arabian Oryx Reserve in Al Wusta Governorate to the Wildlife Breeding Centre in Mirbat, where they were acclimatized to the local environment and cared for in enclosures for three months.

He noted that the gazelles were transported by Environment Authority specialists in specially designed boxes for wild animals, and then shipped via the National Ferries Company to their new enclosures on Al Halaniyat Islands.

Additionally, he explained that the reintroduction process includes monitoring a portion of the herd with GPS and satellite tracking devices, as well as installing several camera traps in strategic locations to observe the herd's movements and ensure their safety.
