Muscat: Astronomical assessments indicate that spotting the crescent moon on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2025, may be difficult. Consequently, Eid Al Fitr is anticipated to be observed on Monday, March 31, 2025, in the Sultanate of Oman, although this will be officially confirmed based on moon sighting.
The traditional observation will take place on the 29th of Ramadan, which corresponds to March 29, 2025, to determine the beginning of Shawwal. A formal announcement will follow a comprehensive verification process.
The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs (MERA) has provided extensive astronomical data and guidelines for observing the crescent moon of Shawwal 1446 AH, in preparation for the official Eid Al Fitr declaration. According to the ministry's findings, the central conjunction is set for Saturday, the 29th of Ramadan 1446 AH, at 2:58 PM, with the surface conjunction occurring at 2:42 PM. In Muscat, sunset is projected for 6:21 PM, with moonset at 6:26 PM, resulting in a mere five-minute window for visibility. The crescent is expected to be about two degrees above the horizon, with an illumination level of 0.4%. Similar visibility conditions are anticipated across other areas in Oman, with minor differences. For instance, in Salalah, the crescent is likely to set five minutes post-sunset, with an illumination of 0.5%. The National Crescent Observation Committee will meet on the evening of Ramadan 29th to verify the sighting, utilizing both astronomical forecasts and local observations. The official announcement regarding the commencement of Shawwal will be made after a thorough verification process.
