EAM Jaishankar Discusses Indian Foreign Policy, Regional Dynamics In UK

London: In a distinguished event organized by Chatham House in partnership with the High Commission of India, UK, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue with Bronwen Maddox, Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House. The discussion focused on India's shifting foreign policy, regional relationships, and the challenges facing the global economy.

During the event, Jaishankar provided insights into the status of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), highlighting its potential to enhance economic relations and foster mutual development, according to an official statement.

Regarding India's relations with its neighbors, the External Affairs Minister emphasized the intricacies of maintaining equilibrium with surrounding nations, particularly China, and underscored the necessity of establishing stable and respectful partnerships in light of evolving regional circumstances.

On the topic of global economic stability, Jaishankar clarified that there is currently no initiative to supplant the US dollar; however, he noted an increasing dialogue on economic resilience and diversification, particularly among BRICS countries, which hold diverse views on the matter.

The statement indicated that Jaishankar reaffirmed India's stance on global governance, emphasizing the significance of collaboration with the United States, acknowledging its pivotal role in the international framework while advocating for a multipolar world.

In addressing human rights concerns, Jaishankar characterized such critiques as predominantly political, asserting that India's democratic institutions are strong, equitable, and dedicated to safeguarding rights, as noted in the statement.

Looking forward, the External Affairs Minister conveyed optimism regarding India's growing involvement in global research, innovation, and enterprise, reiterating the nation's commitment to making significant contributions to the global economy and knowledge sectors.

The event offered an in-depth insight into India's strategic approach towards diplomacy, economic collaboration, and its role as a global leader amid a complex international environment.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar is currently on an official trip to the United Kingdom and Ireland from March 4 to 9, aimed at revitalizing India's amicable relations with both nations.

According to a release from the Ministry of External Affairs, India and the UK have established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that has been reinforced across various sectors, including defense and security, trade and economy, health, education, and interpersonal connections.
