Consumer Protection Authority Seizes Over 115,000 Products For Violations

Muscat: In 2024, the Consumer Protection Authority confiscated over 115,000 products that violated regulations across multiple sectors. Among these, expired items accounted for more than 41,000, with the Dhofar Governorate leading at 48% of the total violations compared to other regions.

Furthermore, the authority prohibited the circulation of certain products, resulting in the seizure of over 16,000 items, with Dhofar again ranking first at 66%. In the category of chewing and smokeless tobacco, more than 15,000 products were confiscated, with Muscat Governorate at the forefront, representing 43% of the total.

In terms of clothing and items that breached public decency standards, over 10,000 products were seized, with North Al Sharqiyah leading at 52%. Additionally, the circulation of electronic cigarettes and shisha was banned, leading to the confiscation of more than 7,000 products, with Muscat Governorate accounting for an impressive 99% of these seizures.

Overall, the total number of seized products in 2024 saw an 18% decrease compared to 2023. This reduction is primarily due to significant declines in several sectors, including a 95% drop in standards and measurements, a 48% decrease in chewing and smokeless tobacco, and a 49% reduction in counterfeit and imitation goods.

This positive trend is attributed to heightened awareness and adherence to regulatory laws by suppliers, which protect consumer rights and help prevent violations. The Consumer Protection Authority has reiterated its commitment to enhancing regulatory and inspection activities to ensure a safe marketplace for consumers and uphold their rights as mandated by law. It also encourages consumers to report any market violations through various communication channels.
