Muscat: The Al Hajar Mountains, featuring notable summits such as Jabal Al Akhdar and Jabal Shams, have emerged as the premier destination for both citizens and residents in search of a refreshing holiday escape.
In celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s Accession Day, a holiday has been designated for January 12, Sunday, prompting many to plan excursions to these stunning locales and take advantage of the extended weekend beginning January 10, Friday.
Jabal Shams, recognized as Oman’s highest peak, recorded the Sultanate's lowest temperature on Tuesday, plummeting to a frigid 2 degrees Celsius.
The Saiq station in South Al Sharqiyah reported a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius, while Jabal Samhan in Dhofar Governorate noted 7 degrees Celsius.
Despite the absence of snowfall on the peaks this year, the invigorating cold air and picturesque scenery are more than sufficient to attract visitors.
“Oman’s mountain ranges offer a stunning diversity that enchants both nature enthusiasts and thrill-seekers,” remarked James Reeves, General Manager of Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa.
The newly inaugurated Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar, part of IHG's Luxury & Lifestyle collection in the region, is situated 2,000 meters above sea level on the "Green Mountains." It has swiftly established itself as a top choice for mountain retreats.
“The dramatic peaks and profound gorges of Jebel Shams, along with the verdant terraces of Jebel Akhdar, provide truly memorable experiences,” remarked Reeves.
Anoop Joseph, the resort's Director of Sales & Marketing, highlighted the growing interest: “Extended weekends in Oman consistently boost domestic tourism. We have already seen a significant number of inquiries for the upcoming days.”
The charm of Jabal Akhdar is found not only in its refreshing climate but also in its distinctive combination of natural splendor and rich cultural heritage.
The region features terraced farms, historic villages, and stunning mountain vistas, providing a tranquil retreat from the hectic pace of everyday life.
“The area is filled with remarkable natural beauty, cultural depth, and countless untold stories,” remarked Reeves. “I am eager for our guests to explore this unique locale — from visiting ancient villages to savoring the cool, refreshing mountain air and indulging in revitalizing wellness treatments. Each stay promises a carefully curated array of unforgettable experiences and must-do activities.”
As the festive season aligns with the holiday, Reeves highlighted the distinctive allure of the mountainous backdrop. “At an elevation of 2,000 meters, where the stars shine a bit brighter and the holiday spirit arrives a little sooner, the experience is genuinely enchanting.”
Oman’s mountainous areas have long been a popular destination for both locals and tourists during the cooler months.
With the holiday offering an extended break, many families and groups are anticipated to flock to the highlands. Adventure seekers are excited about activities such as hiking, stargazing, and navigating the rugged landscape, while others prefer to unwind in the peaceful environment.
Whether it’s the striking cliffs of Jabal Shams or the lush terraces of Jabal Akhdar, these natural marvels exemplify Oman’s varied landscape, ensuring a memorable holiday for everyone.
As Reeves aptly noted, “Every trip to the mountains presents a chance to forge lasting memories. This Accession Day holiday and the forthcoming long weekend are no exceptions.”
With pristine air and unobstructed views of the mountains under a clear sky perfect for stargazing, Oman’s Al Hajar range is poised to welcome numerous visitors in search of an exceptional winter getaway.
