Ibri: Monday marked the commencement of a significant initiative by the Environment Authority in Al Dhahirah Governorate to eradicate Mesquite trees within the Wilayat of Ibri. This program is a strategic response to address the infestation of this particular tree species across multiple locations.
The objective of the campaign is to remove invasive trees collaboratively with the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources within the governorate, targeting areas spanning five kilometers in width.
Fahd bin Saeed Al Nasiri, the Director of the Environment Department in Al Dhahirah Governorate, emphasized that significant efforts are being exerted through these campaigns to eradicate Mesquite trees. This is due to the severe detrimental impact on the environment and animal welfare, as these trees are known to cause harm when livestock consume their leaves or fruits. Furthermore, Mesquite trees adversely affect the local flora, proliferate on agricultural lands, and alter the natural course of valleys due to their aggressive growth, swiftly overpowering and destroying neighboring vegetation.
It is important to acknowledge the collective efforts by the Environment Authority, governmental bodies, private entities, community groups, and residents in the fight against the proliferation of Mesquite trees. The situation is complex, given the seemingly beneficial attributes of these trees, but their negative consequences on the ecosystem and agricultural lands are widely recognized. The efforts are ongoing, aiming at completely eliminating Mesquite trees from the governorate.
