Muscat: In honor of World Environment Day, the Environment Authority (EA) is emphasizing the need for a sustainable environment that is safeguarded by all.
The Sultanate of Oman holds great significance as a nesting ground for sea turtles worldwide, with over 30,000 turtles nesting on Masirah Island annually. Among these, the green turtles and the Rayman 3 are particularly noteworthy.
Out of the seven turtle species found globally, four of them choose the beaches of Masirah Island in the South al Sharqiyah Governorate as their nesting sites.
To protect these precious creatures, the Sultanate has implemented various turtle conservation programs, including the registration and numbering of sea turtles.
Extensive surveys and research conducted since the 1970s have established Oman's global importance in ensuring the survival of sea turtles. Regular beach surveys on Masirah Island have been instrumental in recording and monitoring population trends, nesting activities, and threats faced by nesting turtles. Additionally, initiatives have been implemented to mitigate these threats, advocating for changes at the local and government levels to support sea turtle conservation. Furthermore, efforts have been made to enhance education, community engagement, and overall awareness about sea turtles across Oman.
