Barka: The Biodiversity Centre located in the Wilayat of Barka is a key environmental initiative in the Sultanate of Oman, dedicated to the conservation of endangered species.
This centre was established as part of the Sultanate's commitment to sustainable development and the safeguarding of environmental heritage.
Salim Said Al Maskari, the Director of the Environment Department in South Al Batinah Governorate, stated that the centre serves as a comprehensive platform for the rescue and preservation of biodiversity.
He noted that the centre provides healthcare services for wildlife, emphasizing the protection of endangered species, and contributes to the enhancement of knowledge and expertise in wildlife management.
The centre spans an area of 33,000 square metres and features a well-designed environment that includes designated areas for the protection of both animals and plants, as well as facilities such as a fully equipped veterinary clinic, treatment equipment for animals, and isolation cages when necessary.
Since its inception, the centre has successfully bred various wild animals, including the Arabian gazelle, the oryx, and the sand gazelle, while also rehabilitating several species of birds of prey, such as the Egyptian vulture, the bald eagle, and various falcons.
Additionally, the centre houses a nursery for Omani wild plants, producing around 8,000 seedlings each year of native species like samr, sidr, wild ghaf, shoa, and markh.
This nursery plays a vital role in the national initiative to distribute ten million seedlings of Omani wild trees, overseen by the Environment Authority, thereby aiding in the enhancement of vegetation cover and the preservation of local flora.
The Barka Biodiversity Centre stands out as a leading example of the Sultanate of Oman's dedication to environmental protection and the conservation of its natural resources.
With a well-defined vision and targeted goals, the centre plays a vital role in promoting sustainable development and safeguarding wildlife for the benefit of future generations. This initiative underscores Oman’s steadfast commitment to preserving its natural heritage and enhancing its reputation as a frontrunner in biodiversity conservation.
