Across Oman’s Sands: An American’s Camel Trek For Yemen’s Hope

Muscat: The relationship between humans and camels in the Arab world has existed for thousands of years, and this bond is being reimagined through The Hope Voyage, a 2,200 km humanitarian journey undertaken on foot and camelback by American adventurer Mike Metzger.

Commencing from Abu Dhabi on January 1, 2025, The Hope Voyage is a four-month expedition that intertwines cultural heritage, physical endurance, and a commitment to aid Yemen’s most vulnerable populations.

Accompanied by his loyal camel, Sheba, Metzger's trek serves not only as a test of stamina but also as a mission to deliver free medical assistance, clean water, and sustainable livelihoods to struggling communities in Yemen. Currently at its midpoint in Oman, the expedition has faced both extraordinary generosity and significant obstacles.

Oman has played a crucial role in The Hope Voyage, with its expansive landscapes providing a unique experience for camel travel. “It’s the best country for camel travel,” he remarked.

Yet, Metzger's experience in Oman has also challenged his physical and mental fortitude. “I sprained my ankle and was unable to walk for nine days,” he shared with Times of Oman from Haima, the midpoint of his arduous journey.

He recounted a particularly difficult moment when a friend from Nizwa came to his aid in the middle of the night, describing it as one of the toughest experiences of the trip.

From enduring severe sandstorms for over a week to dealing with painful blisters on his feet, Metzger has faced continuous trials. He remembers a particularly frightening night in Saih Al Zamayim, where the vast desolation of the landscape instilled fear in both him and his camel. Despite these challenges, Oman has also revealed unexpected marvels, including a crow that has accompanied him from Ibri to Haima.

“It’s astonishing. I feel like it’s a guardian watching over us,” he expressed.

Omani Hospitality and Support
Although Metzger's journey through Oman has primarily been a solitary experience, with only occasional visits from travelers worldwide, he has been profoundly moved by the generosity of the Omani people.

"We have received tremendous support from many Omanis who have offered us food, water, dates, and even covered our hotel accommodations," he remarked. This kindness highlights the renowned hospitality of the Omani culture.

Initially, Omani adventurer Nabil Al Busaidi was scheduled to accompany the expedition for part of the trek, but health concerns prevented his involvement. Despite this, Metzger continues to find strength in the encouragement from local residents as he progresses toward the Oman-Yemen border.

The Mission: Hope for Yemen
At its essence, The Hope Voyage transcends mere endurance. The expedition aims to raise awareness and funds for vital initiatives, including the Nesma & Sindibad Medical Clinic, which has offered free healthcare to over 15,000 individuals in Yemen since 2021, as well as freshwater well construction to address water shortages faced by nomadic and agricultural communities.

Additionally, funds are being raised for a national livestock training program aimed at providing Yemenis with sustainable income opportunities.

This journey holds personal significance for Metzger, as he has dedicated the expedition to his cherished camels, Nesma and Sindibad, who passed away in 2019. He believes their spirit continues to inspire him. "Sheba and I are carrying on in their honor," he stated. "This journey is not merely about traversing the desert; it’s about making a meaningful impact."

As Metzger and Sheba navigate the rugged desert terrains of Oman, their expedition underscores the lasting connection between humans and camels, a relationship deeply embedded in Arabian culture.

The paths they traverse mirror those historically taken by Bedouins, traders, and explorers for centuries. Each step through Oman pays homage to a time-honored lifestyle that is gradually diminishing in today’s world.

At every stop, Metzger interacts with local residents, sharing stories and gaining insights into Oman’s rich traditions. Whether enjoying Omani kahwa with village elders or seeking refuge under the shade of an acacia tree, the journey emphasizes the importance of human connection alongside physical endurance.

“I encourage anyone to join, even if just for a day,” he remarked. “This journey is not solely mine; it belongs to all who cherish the values of tradition, resilience, and hope.”

Having reached the halfway point in Haima, Metzger now sets his sights on the final stretch of his adventure—crossing into Yemen and arriving in Tarim, located in Wadi Hadhramaut. Tarim is celebrated as a historic town and a hub of Islamic scholarship.

As Metzger and Sheba continue their trek toward Yemen, their journey stands as a powerful reminder of resilience, tradition, and the kindness of humanity. To support or track their journey, visit www.thehopevoyage.ae.
