Workshop Highlights Human Trafficking Indicators

Muscat: A training workshop on Indicators of Human Trafficking, Raising Awareness of Its Dangers, and the Significance of Reporting It was held on Tuesday.

The goal of the event was to raise public awareness about the symptoms of human trafficking, methods for dealing with victims, encourage a culture of reporting among individuals, and develop community connections to combat the problem.

The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Social Development in partnership with the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, drew numerous child protection delegates, supervisors from the Protection House, and representatives from the Royal Oman Police who work on human trafficking crime indicators.

The workshop included four working papers. The first, submitted by the Royal Oman Police, looked at Indicators of Human Trafficking Crimes.

The second working paper, titled The National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking and International Reports, detailed the committee's duties as defined by the Foreign Ministry.

The Ministry of Labor explained its involvement in human trafficking situations, defining forced labor as any labor or service performed under threat of penalty that the individual did not willingly consent to perform.

Indicators include unpaid wages, confiscation of passports, long working hours without remuneration, threats of dismissal or deportation, verbal or physical abuse, restricted freedom of movement, and unlawful use of minors.

The workshop concluded with an examination of the Legal Framework for Human Trafficking Crimes in the Sultanate of Oman. The study looked at the legal protections established in the State's Basic Statute, which was established by Royal Decree No. 6/2021.

Furthermore, the workshop examined provisions of international agreements governing human trafficking.
