In Dhofar governorate, Salalah recorded a temperature of 30.8 degrees Celsius, which was 1.3 degrees above the monthly average. Masirah followed closely at 31.3 degrees (+0.9) and Thumrait at 31.3 degrees (+0.4).
On the other hand, Dhalkut reported 72.2 mm of rainfall, with Salalah Port and Wadi Bani Khalid both receiving 52.2 mm of rainfall.
Barka experienced one of the highest temperatures in May at 47.9 degrees Celsius, while Jabel Shams had one of the lowest temperatures at 18.9 degrees Celsius during the same period.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) revealed that May 2024 was the warmest May on record, continuing the trend of 12 consecutive months with record-breaking global average temperatures for each corresponding month.
The UN Secretary General referenced the C3S data in a call for immediate action, coinciding with the release of two new reports on various aspects of climate change.
The global average temperature in May 2024 exceeded the 1991-2020 average by 0.65°C and surpassed the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900 by 1.52°C. This marks the 11th consecutive month, starting from July 2023, where the global average temperature has reached or exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
The latest data from C3S reveals that the global average temperature for the past 12 months (June 2023 - May 2024) is the highest on record, with a deviation of 0.75°C above the 1991-2020 average and 1.63°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average.
