MUSCAT: The seminar titled 'The Reality of Women's Employment in Light of Labour Law Amendments', hosted by the Women Workers' Committee of the General Federation of Oman Trade Unions (GFOTU), concluded with a series of critical recommendations designed to fortify women's rights within the employment sphere.
This event convened stakeholders from both local and international backgrounds, including representatives from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Ministry of Labour (MoL), and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI).
Among the key recommendations emerging from the seminar were the initiation of extensive awareness campaigns aimed at educating women about their legal entitlements, particularly in light of the recent amendments to labour and social protection legislation.
The seminar also highlighted the significance of engaging with women with disabilities to ensure their active participation in these initiatives. Furthermore, it recommended the support of women's progression into leadership positions through the implementation of training and monitoring programs. The issue of equitable remuneration for equal work was also addressed, with a strong call for employers to ensure wage equality between genders, in alignment with global standards.
The seminar stressed the necessity for safer working conditions, advocating for more rigorous enforcement of policies against workplace harassment and violence. Additionally, it called for improved adherence to maternity rights, including the provision of paid maternity leave and breastfeeding accommodations, alongside the promotion of flexible work arrangements, such as the establishment of workplace childcare facilities.
The recommendations also included incentives for businesses to increase female employment, support for female entrepreneurs through training and financial assistance, and the enhancement of international visibility for Omani women.
The seminar underscored the importance of a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to safeguard and empower women in the workforce, reflecting Oman's dedication to the advancement of women's rights in the context of Oman Vision 2040.
