Muscat: Fisheries Development Oman (FDO), renowned for its significant contribution to food security in Oman, celebrated the inauguration of the Al Khuwaymah small-scale shrimp farming project in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali. Valued at RO 16 million, this farm spans an impressive area of 2 million m2 and is expected to produce 3,700 tonnes of white-legged shrimp annually by 2024, with a future target of 4,000 tonnes per year. The initial phase of experimental production, initiated in March, has already resulted in a harvest of approximately 500 tonnes of shrimp.
This project focuses on cultivating white-legged shrimp due to their suitability for Oman's weather conditions, as well as their high demand and quality. Oriental Shrimp Farming, the operating company, currently employs 170 workers, with 35% of the workforce being Omanis as part of the Omanisation initiative.
