Messi Levels Ronaldo's Record In Potential Argentina Farewell; Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay Qualify For WC 2026

Buenos Aires: In what could be his final appearance for Argentina, Lionel Messi matched Cristiano Ronaldo's long-standing record by scoring two goals. At the same time, Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay secured their spots for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay achieved qualification for this major sporting event by preventing Venezuela and Bolivia from securing automatic entry. They will now have to compete for the region's place in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.

If Messi indeed played his last match for the Albiceleste in Argentina, the home supporters made sure he exited in a fitting manner. 'The Atomic Flea' completed two goals, one with a delicate touch and the other with accuracy, igniting the crowd at the Monumental into a frenzy. The atmosphere was festive, with fireworks lighting up the sky as they bid farewell to their local hero following Argentina's 3-0 victory.

With his impressive brace, Messi equaled Ronaldo's record for the most goals scored in World Cup qualifying matches, with both players now at 36 goals each. Messi is currently behind Carlos Ruiz, who leads with 39 goals.

Colombia triumphed over Bolivia with a 3-0 victory, thanks to goals from James Rodriguez (31), Jhon Duran (74), and Juan Quintero (83). After missing out on the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Colombia found comfort in their recent success.

Uruguay easily defeated Peru to secure their place in the World Cup for the fifth consecutive time, with Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta shining as key players. Rodrigo (14) and Giorgian (58) troubled Peru's defense, while Federico Vinas (80) delivered the final blow, ensuring a 3-0 victory for Uruguay.

Marcelo Bielsa, who previously coached Argentina during the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup and Chile at the South Africa 2010 World Cup, aims to achieve success with Uruguay in this football spectacle. In the meantime, Paraguay has ended its 16-year absence from the World Cup by securing a goalless draw against Ecuador.
