Oman’s First Ecological Park For Baobab Trees Established In Wilayat Of Mirbat

In Mirbat, the Environment Authority has launched a campaign to plant 160 baobab trees in collaboration with the "Environment Conservation Society," which is currently being established. This initiative marks the initial phase of creating an environmental park dedicated to baobab trees in the Sultanate of Oman.

The baobab park will complement a series of sites aimed at the domestication of wild trees across various governorates in Oman, all under the oversight of the Environment Authority. This new project aims to conserve and promote the growth of these rare plant species and is aligned with the “National Campaign to Plant 10 Million Wild Trees” taking place in the governorates of Oman.

Eng. Zahran Ahmed Al-Abdussalam, the Director General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, emphasized that the new environmental park in Hasheer Plain, located in the Wilayat of Mirbat, was established due to its proximity to key natural habitats for baobab trees, including Wadi Hanna.

Al-Abdussalam further explained that as part of the campaign, baobab seeds were collected and nurtured in nurseries before being transplanted into the environmental park, which will host approximately 160 baobab trees. A spacing of about 8 meters is maintained between the trees, which are known for their large trunks.

Through the establishment of such parks, the Environment Authority aims to safeguard and sustain rare plant species. Al-Abdussalam noted that the Authority is also setting up permanent centers for the study of these plants, educating the public about them, and producing seeds to facilitate their growth in greater quantities in the future.
