Omani Students Rank First Internationally In GLOBE Environmental Research Programme

Muscat: In the worldwide competition of the 2025 GLOBE Environmental Programme, Omani students achieved first place on a global scale.

Khalfan Issa Al Husseini and Elias Walid Al Suleimani, two students from "Said bin Nasser Al-Kindi Basic Education School" located in the Muscat Governorate, secured the top position in GLOBE’s International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS) within both the global and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions. Their project was titled "Investigating GLOBE students’ 10-year record of temperatures, compared to readings from the meteorological station in the Wilayat of Al-Amerat. "

This award-winning study focused on gathering daily temperature records from 2015 through 2024 in the Wilayat of Al Amerat. They employed GLOBE methodologies and compared their results with the temperature data provided by the Meteorological Department.

The goal of the research was to evaluate the consistency of temperature readings, analyze discrepancies, and investigate the potential factors leading to these differences.

Findings revealed minor variations between the temperature recorded by the students and that registered by the weather station, particularly when examining corresponding months across previous years.

The study highlighted that different locations and the devices utilized for data collection could cause variations in temperature readings from site to site.

Additionally, it is significant to mention that in December 2009, the Sultanate of Oman entered into a memorandum of understanding for environmental collaboration with the GLOBE Global Environmental Programme, which operates under the auspices of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This international educational initiative, which commenced in 1994, focuses on environmental science and education.

Its mission is to enhance student awareness regarding global environmental issues, foster advancements in science, mathematics, and geography, and promote international cooperation in monitoring efforts, in support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
