Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman, under the representation of the Council of Oman, participated in the 149th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)’s General Assembly, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland.
Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, the Chairman of the Shura Council, delivered a notable address during the session. In his speech, he outlined the Sultanate of Oman's efforts to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) programs and cutting-edge digital technologies towards achieving strategic objectives that align with the principles of sustainable development and security, through the pursuit of science, knowledge, technology, and innovation.
Furthermore, Al Maawali emphasized the importance of fostering international collaboration to secure beneficial outcomes for nations and their populations, both in the immediate and long-term.
During his discourse, Al Maawali highlighted the risks associated with the misuse of AI technologies, particularly in the manipulation of humanitarian issues that impact global populations. He specifically mentioned the ongoing AI-driven aggression towards the Gaza Strip and the Lebanese Republic.
Al Maawali underscored the urgency to unite efforts and implement all feasible measures to halt the violations and atrocities committed in the State of Palestine and the Lebanese Republic.
"The mission of the IPU transcends the mere facilitation of dialogue among parliaments. It aims to confront and address all forms of aggression and injustice that jeopardize international stability, challenge the rights of peoples, and threaten global peace," Al Maawali stated.
